Machining Researcher

The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) is seeking a Machining Researcher to work on collaborative teams with industry technical leaders, academic experts, and world-class researchers to develop and implement solutions for real-world challenges in advanced manufacturing.

Job Description

The Machining Researcher will execute research related to conventional and non-conventional machining processes at CCAM. Industrial experience in machining is preferred. Technical activities could include:

  • Execute research on conventional and non-conventional machining processes
  • Design, setup, drive execution, and evaluate results of machining tests
  • Provide expert advice on machining technologies for research in other areas
  • Design, build, and validate part production processes utilizing machining technologies

In this role you will help discover technology breakthroughs and developments that can influence global manufacturing. Researchers perform in a dynamic, collaborative environment with cross-functional teams, and work with research managers and customers to develop, define, and execute applied research programs.  All researchers are encouraged to seek opportunities to patent CCAM’s research. Researchers are expected to provide training to technicians, interns, and visiting researchers from industrial and academic partners.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience conducting research in machining technology.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in several of the following technical areas:
    • Mechanics of machining engineering materials
    • 5-axis CNC multi-task machining centers
    • Shop floor data acquisition
    • Process control and improvement
    • Computer aided design and manufacturing
    • Emerging manufacturing technologies
  • Able to instruct and mentor novices in the above technical areas.

The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • Ten or more years’ experience conducting research in machining technology in academia and, preferably, industrial manufacturing.
  • Highly knowledgeable and experienced with the following capabilities:
    • Mechanics of machining engineering materials
    • Experience with CAD/CAM for machining, especially using Siemens Technomatix products
    • Experience in the production of high-tech, high-value parts (such as for aerospace components).
    • Experience with machining high strength, hard metals (such as nickel superalloys).
    • Experience conducting and/or leading process improvement initiatives.
    • Experience mentoring novice level employees.
    • Experience estimating schedules and costs for proposed research projects.
    • Experience leading in a team environment
